Logo Muntanya d`AlacantIt is the most interior region of the province, following the national main road of Madrid from the provincial capital. It borders on the provinces of Albacete and Murcia and it was not included in the province of Alicante until the middle of the 19th century.

The climate of this area is really extreme. The region lies in a high plateau where the main geographic feature is the river Vinalopó, which crosses the province from north to south and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered on the south-west by the mountains of Salinas and on the north by the mountains of La Fontanella and La Argueña. Between Sax and Elda we find the Lagoons of Salinas. It is a dry land where vine and olive trees are the principal crops. Wines are renowned and protected by the Spanish designation of origin. As well as in the regions nearby, the main occupation here is shoe manufacturing, leather goods and furs. We can`t forget the impressive village of Biar, which dominates the entire valley of this region, where the Castle and the mountains bordering the aforementioned village are its main attraction.
